The Louis Calder Foundation

Louis Calder, founder The Foundation was established in 1951 by Louis Calder (1879-1963) "for educational, charitable and benevolent uses and purposes" and continues to operate as a Trust under New York State law. It was funded by gifts that Mr. Calder made during his lifetime and under his will.

Louis Calder was born in Manhattan in 1879. At the age of 17, Mr. Calder began a 66-year career in the paper industry as an office boy at Perkins-Goodwin Co., a New York City pulp and paper marketing and management firm. Acquiring his first shares of Perkins-Goodwin stock in 1907, he became a director two years later and was named President of the firm in 1922. Subsequently, he became Chairman and remained in that capacity until his death in 1963. In the 1930's, Mr. Calder decided that the manufacture of newsprint from southern pine was feasible commercially and with the establishment of Southland Paper Mills in 1940, was instrumental in the development of the newsprint industry in the Southwest.

While he was establishing Perkins-Goodwin as a leader in the industry, Louis Calder was also a successful pioneer in the retail gasoline market. During the First World War, Mr. Calder originated one of the first drive-in, metered gasoline service stations in New York, eliminating the need to purchase gasoline from five-gallon cans. This venture, known as the Kesbec Oil Company, had grown to a chain of 55 stations by 1931 when a controlling interest was sold to Standard Oil. Mr. Calder continued as President of the Company as the chain became a familiar sight on New York area parkways growing to over 80 stations throughout New York City and Westchester County. The aggregate market or appraised value of the Founder's gifts to the Foundation was $36,399,017. Net gain realized on the sale of assets during the period 1951-2007 was $146,576,425. Grant payments total $195,983,685 over the life of the Trust. As of October 31, 2007, the market value of the Trust was $175,905,805.
