The Louis Calder Foundation

The Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals.
Organizations unfamiliar to the Foundation, or those that are not current grantees, are welcome to submit a letter of inquiry.

A brief background letter describing the organization’s plans and efforts should include a concise statement of the purpose of the program proposed for funding.

The Foundation has no formal application form and requests that organizations use the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers Common Application Form.

If the organization's programming falls within the parameters of the Foundation's current grantmaking interests, the organization will be invited to submit a proposal and will be required to submit the following material.

  1. Copy of the Internal Revenue Service "Letter of Determination" confirming applicant's tax status as an "exempt organization" and as an organization that is "not a private foundation".

  2. Where the applicant is not widely known, a brief description of the nature, history and activities of the applicant.

  3. A current list of the applicant's members, trustees, directors and/or officers.

  4. A copy of the applicant's latest audited financial statements or a summary thereof, if included in an official publication of the applicant.

  5. A detailed budget and prior income and expense statement for the project, program, or organization, as applicable. The budget should list all proposed sources and amounts of support.

  6. A statement of other foundations currently supporting the applicant or the project and the purpose and amounts of their commitments.

Please note that a proposal cannot be considered by the Foundation unless all required supporting documentation has been submitted for review.

The Trustees have no set schedule of meetings, and appointments with a grant seeker will be arranged only after a proposal has been received and when deemed to serve a useful purpose in light of the objectives of the Foundation and the applicant. Proposal review is an extensive process that entails a lengthy dialogue between the Foundation and grantseeker before it is submitted to the Trustees for determination. The process can take several months and grantseekers are encouraged to consider the timing of their request, especially if funds are needed by a certain date.

The timing of a review and decision on a pending proposal depends upon a number of factors, including the number and nature of requests under consideration, applicant's fiscal year, and the availability of funds. The Foundation's fiscal year ends on October 31st.
